Bicycle Accidents

In 2013, nearly 20,000 people in the United States were injured or killed as a result of a bicycle accident.

While bicycle accidents only account for 2% of all motor vehicle crash deaths nationwide, South Carolina has the 5th highest deaths per capitaamong all states.

When riding a bicycle there is little to protect you from a negligent driver in a vehicle, making the risk of injury very high. The range of injuries these victims face is broad. Some are lucky and only suffer minor scrapes and bruises. Others are not so lucky and face broken bones, internal injuries, and even death.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of a bicycle accident, you already know that this type of accident can cause other kinds of difficulties besides physical injury, too.

You may now be facing steep medical bills and need help communicating with your insurance company. You also may be facing the inability to work in order to support your family. When you can’t make a living, things like medical bills become even more stressful.

What does this mean for you?

Because the Conway and Myrtle Beach areas of Horry County, South Carolina are a tourist destination serving millions of visitors a year, bicycle accidents are an increased risk given the recreational activities of people and traffic congestion.

Wearing reflective gear and helmets certainly help minimize accidents, but there is still a great risk sharing the roads with vehicles.

Data from 2010 by the CDC show bicycle injuries cost $10 billion in lifetime medical costs and lost productivity.

Bicycle Accidents with Motor Vehicles

Most bicycle accidents involve some sort of collision with a motor vehicle due to the negligence of the motor vehicle’s driver. There are many different situations in which this type of accident may occur, but one of the most prevalent involves a motor vehicle turning into the path of a cyclist.

Some of these accidents occur when a vehicle crosses incoming traffic to turn, and does not see the cyclist. Other accidents occur when a vehicle turns into the lane of the cyclist that was riding next to them.

Another type of dangerous accident involving a cyclist and a motor vehicle is an accident involving a trailer. When a motor vehicle hauling some sort of trailer makes a sudden directional movement however so slight, the trailer it is pulling can whip violently. This creates quite a concerning hazard for any person on a bicycle in the vicinity of the trailer.

If you have been involved in one of the types of accidents described above and now suffer injury or harm of any kind, seek help! Sometimes when an accident involves a bicycle and a motor vehicle, it is assumed that the cyclist is at fault even though you really weren’t. Don’t be fooled by this.

You have rights as a cyclist. Call us today to discuss what can be done to help you.

Accidents Involving Hit and Runs

There are a few things that you should know if you find yourself in an accident involving a bicycle and the wrongful party leaves the scene. This is commonly known as a “hit and run.”

  1. File a police report as soon as possible.
  2. Notify your auto and health insurance companies as soon as possible.
  3. Get medical attention!
  4. Identify witnesses of the accident and get their information.

Accidents Involving Dog Bites

There are also some things you need to know if ever bitten by a dog or chased by a dog while riding your bicycle.

If while riding a dog attempts to catch up with you or chase you, remain calm! Be aware of your surroundings, and don’t let the situation turn into a collision between you and another rider, car, or other obstacles.

The best thing you can do is come to a slow stop. Place your bicycle between you and dog to provide you with some protection if the dog attempts to get too close.

If you suffer a dog bite as a result of this situation, make sure you document the incident. Take pictures of: your injuries; the dog; and the area in which you were bit.

Dog bite cases can be difficult to pursue, but do not let that discourage you! Dog owners are responsible for any harm caused by their animals.
