PassportThe new passport requirements that have complicated travel this summer also have uncovered vast numbers of parents who owe back child support. Through the Passport Denial Program, the State Department denies passports to noncustodial parents who owe more than $2,500 in back child support. Once the parents make good on their debts, they can reapply for passports.

Now that millions of additional travelers need passports to fly back from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean and South America, collections under the Passport Denial Program are on pace to about double this year. In all, states have reported collecting at least $22.5 million through the program thus far in 2007. The money is then forwarded to the parent to whom it is owed.

A Checklist for Divorce

  1. Find a good Divorce Lawyer
  2. Make sure your attorney will fight for your rights.
  3. Understand your Financial Situation
  4. Make sure that you have a clear picture of what you both own as well as what you both owe. Put a complete inventory together of all of your belongings. A credit report will also be a good idea.
  5. Determine Income
  6. Get tax returns, recent pay stubs, bank statements and any other financial data available.
  7. Prepare a Budget for after the Divorce
    Your Income may drop dramatically after the divorce so prepare a budget to make sure you are ready
  8. Establish Your Own Credit
    If you don't have any credit in your name, you should establish an account now. Make sure it is in your name. Do not run up a lot of debt.
  9. Take Care of Joint Credit Accounts
    Try to close all joint accounts. Closing them before divorce proceedings will keep an angry spouse from using the account and running up charges that you may later be held responsible for.
  10. Don't Move out
    Talk to your Attorney before moving out. If you are in danger, then of course you should get out of the situation as soon as possible. It is possible that moving out can hurt your case.
  11. Be on Your Best Behavior
    Don't give your spouse anything that can be used against you. Divorce can mean your live will be examined very closely and if your case goes to court you don't want to give them anything that can be used against you
